John Jackie Mitchell joined the Churchill Flute Band as a young boy in 1955. He began his banding career in the percussion section. For 2 years he played cymbals with pride. His mother used to get the job of cleaning them with ash to get a shine. Along side his new friend Robin, in 1957 Jackie moved to side drum under Drum Coach Raymond Nicholl.
Over the next few years Jackie was fortunate to be part of a corp of drums who saw much success gaining 1st place 3 years running at the All Ireland contest.
In 1966 Jackie married Irene and had 4 daughters. To Jackie's delight all 4 joined the band. Donna in 79, Heather in 81, Jackelene in 85 and Gemma in 99. Jackie is very lucky to have a very close family circle and this meant he also saw nieces and son in laws become part of the band over the years. All girls played a large part in the running of the band during their time. Although the girls have all left Jackie has now a grand daughter Aime and grandson David to follow in the family tradition.
Due to health reasons Jackie is no longer able to take part in parades but is still very active within the band and is still very keen on taking part in concerts and contests and any social event going!
He has always been proud to be a member of the Churchill Flute Band and the officers and members would like to thank him for being a loyal member and a gentleman through out his 52 years service and for many more years to come.
